Story
Thanks for ambling over to our JustGiving page! We're raising money to help disadvantaged young people take part in Ten Tors and D of E.
John C: Last time I did Ten Tors I was 13 and was the 'sub' on the team. I stepped in at the last minute when Stephen Bunney spent too long under a sunbed. It was great fun and I've always wanted to do it again, but have been too old for quite some time now.
John H: I am much older than my friend John. Never had the chance to do Ten Tors. My children did and absolutely loved it...
now it's my turn!
We'll be part of a team walking a 35 mile route across the north of Dartmoor - whatever the weather. If you've ever hiked there you'll know that Dartmoor miles aren't the same as other miles! They involve boot-stealing bogs, tuffety grass, various river crossings, and the weather can change in the shake of a Dartmoor lamb's tail. We'll carry all our stuff and sleep out on the moor - following the same route and kit rules as the 'real' Ten Tors. The navigation is half the challenge, as when the mist rolls in you have to rely on your map and compass skills (and team patience!) to get you and your team to the next check-point.
The money we raise goes to support disadvantaged students so that they can take part in Ten Tors and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme themselves. The Outdoor Education department at South Dartmoor Community College (where Mayah and Ava Cleverley now go) will use the money to fund places on these expeditions, as well as to pay for kit for the young people to borrow so that there are no barriers to them taking part. These expeditions are great experiences for young people and can give them skills that they'll draw on for the rest of their lives, as well as helping them in their search for employment. Raising money to help them take part, levels the playing-field a little more for them.
- £50 could pay for a pupil's entry fee for Ten Tors; £40 for D of E entry.
- Between £10 & £50 could cover the costs of a D of E expedition for a young person - to pay for camping, transport and external assessors.
- Other funds raised go towards buying expedition equipment such as tents, coats and trangias to lend to pupils each year.
We'll be busy training for the trek on weekends out on the moor from now on and we'd really appreciate your support!
Donating through JustGiving is simple, quick and totally secure. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity.
