Story
The Salvation Army has been protecting and caring for survivors of slavery since our early beginnings in the 1880's.
Two survivors of modern slavery, Jenny* and Dan* who were supported by The Salvation Army have chosen to join Team Sally Army and skydive to raise vital funds to help other survivors and encourage other people to sign up for this challenge. Please donate to Jenny and Dan who have already shown tremendous bravery in rebuilding their lives to give them a welcome boost in taking on a Skydive.
Here’s why they want to help.
Jenny was groomed by an older man whilst still in her teens and then sold to a criminal gang who sexually exploited her for years. Then one day things changed. She reached out for help and was recommended to contact The Salvation Army. Within two hours she had been picked up and taken to a safe house, where specialist support workers helped her get the help she needed.
Jenny said:
“If it wasn’t for The Salvation Army I would have been dead by now. The Salvation Army was by my side in the scariest moments of my life. They gave me hope and helped me find my wings and
a confidence to face my fears. I want to do this Skydive to raise money for The Salvation Army so they can continue to be by the side of those who need them most, to walk with people during the scariest times of their lives! Also I want to fly!”
Dan was forced to sell drugs by his bosses at the warehouse where he worked. They made him run up huge debts and didn’t pay him for the long hours he worked. When the police raided the warehouse they realised he was a victim and took him to a safe house where The
Salvation Army and its partners helped him to recover from his ordeal.
Dan said:
“I was always treated with respect, honesty and integrity. I learned so much from cooking skills to languages and other cultures and their positive energy would instantly cheer me up whenever I felt down. They also helped me apply for work and my confidence grew under their care. Amazing people who deserve recognition. What an amazing service. I will forever be in their debt.”
- Our Anti-Trafficking and Modern
Slavery Unit focuses on PREVENTING Modern Slavery and the trafficking of
people; PROTECTING individuals on their journey from victim to survivor and
ensuring that in doing so, we PROGRESS the survivors’ journey to sustained
freedom.
- Our national Survivor Support
Service, works alongside governmental (statutory) and non-governmental services
by providing practical and holistic support to survivors of modern slavery
through drop-in services and mentoring.
- Our anti-trafficking work takes
place on an international scale as we provide technical and/or funding support
for projects as well as support the development of communities of practice in
regions around the world to improve communication, learning and our global
response to trafficking.
- Our Survivors Support Fund
provides additional support to survivors of modern slavery where no other
funding is available to meet their immediate needs and ease their transition
into independent living. This might be a deposit or purchasing items for
someone to move into their own home, or help accessing training, education or
employment.
