Event: The Salvation Army Christmas, from 31 December 2023 to 31 January 2024
With the current cost-of-living crisis, thousands of people are expected to turn to The Salvation Army for help this winter. In over 650 communities across the UK, we will be doing all we can for them, whatever their circumstances.

Story

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow
In the bleak midwinter, long, long ago...

Due to the ongoing current economic climate, in what should be a season of joy as we approach Christmastime, we know that for many it will again be season of sorrow, and therefore The Salvation Army in Newcastle wants to do all that it can to bring some sense of comfort and hope to those who will struggle over the winter months.

In late November 2022, The Salvation Army in Newcastle finally relocated to its new purpose-built worship and community centre in the Cowgate / Fenham area of the City, and began to develop of programme of activities which we hoped would appeal to local needs.

It was a record year for our annual toy and gift appeal with over 550 children across the city receiving gifts, thanks to the generosity of our members and supporters.

From November through to late March we were able to operate as a Welcome Warm Space, opening our doors to members of the local community, so that they could come and receive not only a warm welcome and friendly conversation with some of our regular members, but enjoy some hot refreshments, and it is our intention to do that again this coming wintertime too.

Christina Rossetti who wrote the words to the popular carol 'In The Bleak Midwinter' ponders in the final verse,

What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb
If I were a wise man, I would do my part
Yet what I can, I give Him, give my heart

What can we give this Christmas? Will you partner with us in bringing tidings of comfort and joy to those who are suffering, those who are struggling? Each financial gift - no matter how small will mean so much, not least to those who will benefit from it. Together we really can make a difference.
