Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Oliver and I are raising money for Alzheimers Research. We have both had close family members who have been affected by this awful disease and desperately would like more money to be invested into researching prevention, causes and treatments whilst supporting current sufferers and their families.
My name’s Theresa and I’m an occupational therapist and practice educator for Dorset Healthcare University Foundation Trust.
I was brought up by a single parent (my mum) and when I was small my uncle was a constant role model in my life. Roger worked for the bank, he was warm, clever, hard-working, selfless and caring and spent his spare time raising money for various charities including the Lions club. He was what we would consider a “solid and good” person and I adored him. As you can see from our photo, he was convinced I would swim the channel one day!
Last year, my uncle started to become disorientated when driving, now, my Uncle could tell you every road route from here to Timbuctoo so we as a family were a little worried but not overly concerned. When he started mixing up his words, we put it down to him overworking and being tired, but when he started making accounting errors and basic arithmetic mistakes (he was a bank manager) alarm bells really started ringing.
Unfortunately our suspicions were confirmed by his GP who referred him for further tests but diagnosed him with early onset Alzheimers. We were devastated, and as the disease took hold, the man I loved began to disappear.
This year I am walking with my son from London to Brighton (100k) approximately 63 miles in aid of the Alzheimers society to raise as much money as we can to support this amazing charity and help fund vital research into prevention, treatments and fund support for families.
Any donation you can spare would be amazing and help toward our target - thank you in advance :)
