We are The Mongol Marauders, aka Jack Eddy and Robert Templeton, a team of two students from the University of Bath. On July 20th we will depart from Battersea Park, London and be attempting to drive, totally unsupported, all the way to Ulaanbatar, Mongolia.
You may imagine that to undertake this monumental task we would be equipping ourselves with a fully off road capable, four wheel drive vehicle. To help tackle some of the more interesting 'roads' that we will encounter as we head further East.
However, as we are doing it as part of The Mongol Rally 2014, there are a few rules in place to make it far less easy. The remit of The Mongol Rally, is to complete the trip in a totally unsuitable vehicle, the rules being that, the vehicle must have less than a 1.2 litre engine, and cost you less than £200.
Our vehicle of choice is a 1988 MK2 Volkswagen Polo, also known as a 'Bread van'.
If the odds weren't already stacked heavily enough on the side of utter failure, we have also elected as a team to make the drive back again! The entire trip totaling over 16,000 miles, taking more than 2 months, and passing through 20 different countries.
