Story
For the month of April, Molly and I will be using our time on furlough to run 50km around London dressed as a piece of fruit, more specifically a banana and a pineapple! Keep an eye out for us around the Hammersmith and Fulham area, i'm sure we won't be hard to spot.
Why have we decided to publicly humiliate ourselves in this way you may ask? We are taking part in the FoodCycle 50 Challenge and raising funds for FoodCycle to provide nutritious meals and friendly conversation to vulnerable people across the country. Since December 2020, I (Lucy) have been volunteering as a Check-in and Chat Volunteer for FoodCycle. This involves making 4 phone calls a week to individuals across the country. This service provides a key social link for vulnerable people who are isolating, who may be experiencing loneliness or who just need to hear a friendly voice at the end of the phone.
The Office for National Statistics reports that 2.6 million households are struggling to cover expenses such as energy and food. Meanwhile, 5 million tonnes of edible food is wasted in the UK every year. This fundraising event will help to ensure that FoodCycle can continue to support the most vulnerable in 2021, whether through the re-launch of Community Meals or expanding the number of projects to reach more people.
Any donations would be berry appreciated! Thanks a melon...
