Story

Hi My name is Brian Doherty I have a condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa as a result over the years my vision has deteriorated to less than 10%, living with sight loss has many challenges on a daily basis, personal safety being paramount. I have managed so far to retain some independence with the help of a cane & understanding family & friends. Seven years ago my daughter Máiréad made the suggestion to incorporate my love of long walks with raising money for Guide Dogs, what started as a lone venture became two, as my son Tiarnán became my training partner.  With enthusiastic help from friend & neighbour Terry Hasson & the Rasharkin Healthy Club The Doc's Big Walk was born. Over the past 6 years I have been humbled by the support of Family, Friends, the Rasharkin community & communities near & as far away as Australia. Helping me attain maximum fitness are Aaron & Erin from the Training Hub Cloughmills who I can't thank enough.

The Doc's Big Walk will take place on Sunday 10th July, starting at 11.00 am at the Tower in Cushendall wending our way over Layde to Cushendun and then following the scenic coastal Torr road to Ballycastle, so please give generously to this very worthy cause, as the cost of just one Guide Dog is approximately £60,000.00, let's not forget that people with sight loss still struggle to be independent in their daily lives. Thank you.

The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of people with sight loss never leave home alone. We empower visually impaired people to do that and rely on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service.
