Story
This page is in honor of Mike Dandy- husband to Eithne, father to Peter and Eleanor. Mike died on 13 April 2011 of an Astrocytic tumour, aged just 56 years old.
The central nervous system (CNS) is made up of the brain and spinal cord. Cells within the CNS normally grow in an orderly and controlled way. However if this order is disrupted the cells continue to divide and form a lump, or tumour. In a malignant tumour, the cells can invade and destroy surrounding tissue and may spread to other parts of the brain.
Mike had a Astrocytic tumour. They are the most common type of glioma and develop from a star-shaped cell called an astrocyte. Within the brain there are nerve cells that support and protect the nerve cells. These are called glial cells. A tumour of these is known as a glioma.
Mike had a grade 4 malignant enhancing tumour . A low grade is 1 – 2 and the high grades are 3-4 (4 being the most severe).
Diagnosed in February 2011 we lost him after only 3 months. We had no real time to say our good byes and this was all because there is not enough money channelled towards research in order to know how to treat, and diagnose early enough, this deadly disease.
Brain Tumour Research was launched specifically to raise substantial funds for brain tumour research.
16 000 people are diagnosed with a brain tumour each year yet brain tumour research receives less than 1% (0.7%) of national cancer research spending in the UK.
‘the dandy trust’ is one of the umbrella groups that is an extension of Brain Tumour Research and all funds raised from the trust go directly to Brain Tumour Research. Its mission is to raise at least £7 million per year to fund seven centres of excellence throughout the UK. This will accelerate progress significantly, making a clinical difference and improving outcomes.
Please help us by giving as much as you can.
