Story
Tam Smith, Willie Mackenzie and Neil MacRae are running The Edinburgh Half Marathon on Sunday 27 May 2012. The purpose of the run is to raise funds for The Sick Kids Friends Foundation through The Craig Gowans Memorial Fund.
One of Craig’s friends from school Gemma Maxwell will also be running the Edinburgh Marathon on the 27th May 2012. A few words from Gemma:
“A day has not gone by since the 8th of July 6 and a half years ago that I have not thought of Craig or been reminded by him to live my life to the full. This year I am taking on the Edinburgh Marathon and I could not think of a more worthy cause to support. The 4 week count down to Sunday the 27th of May is nearly upon me and therefore it’s about time to start raising some money. I am running along with 4 other girls dressed as The Incredibles. We are aiming for around the 4 hour mark so if you have any money to spare or fancy coming down to support us on the day we would very much appreciate it”.
The Craig Gowans Memorial Fund was established in April 2007, the motivation at the heart of this venture was to ensure that the memory of Craig is used as a driving force for good.Craig passed tragically on the 8th of July 2005, two weeks into his professional contract with Falkirk Football Club. He had been instructed to push a six-meter high net designed to catch stray balls when one of the metal poles came into contact with overhead power lines. It was said at the time that if everyone was like Craig, then heaven would be on earth; a statement echoed by his friends and family, who still think about him every day.In his seventeen years he excelled at everything he did: a straight-A pupil and talented artist from Stewart's Melville College, he had an unconditional offer to study Architecture at Edinburgh College of Art. As an athlete he flourished too, winning the Schools Athletic Championship and emerging as a rising star in the football world, with Falkirk Football Club. However, his greatest achievements were as a person. His huge capacity for giving meant he was a true friend to many. He is remembered for having an incredible personality and being easily recognizable by his beautiful smile. He is deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. The loss of Craig is still extremely difficult for us to bear, but by using his memory as motivation for good, Craig’s legacy lives on forever.
