Story

Hello, and thank you for visiting this page!

I have reunited some of my school friends to share a song with you that we last sang together 11 years ago, at our school leavers performance. I can't imagine back then, that we would have ever found ourselves reconnecting with it under these circumstances, but the message is too important not to share right now. And I hope that by listening, you may be inspired to support the cause I have chosen to fundraise for.

As many of you may already know, Stephen Lawrence was the victim of an unprovoked racial attack back in 1993, which sadly led to him losing his life. He was only 18. He didn't know his attackers and they didn't know him. It took Stephen's family 19 years to finally see two of his murderers (though there were thought to be 5/6) to be found guilty. His death led to profound cultural changes in attitudes to racism, to the law and to police practice here in the UK, including:

  • Changes in the definition of a racist attack
  • Improvements in homicide investigations
  • New discipline procedures in the police
  • The abolition of the double jeopardy rule that prevented people from being tried for the same crime twice.

I have chosen to fundraise for The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, to support their work in tackling inequality in all forms. They transform lives of young people from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds, to inspire and enable them to succeed in the career of their choice; a chance that Stephen never had. They also play an active role in building stronger communities, and helping organisations to create a more inclusive culture, in order to achieve lasting social impact.

If you'd like to be a part of this cause and support us in making a difference, myself and my friends involved in this project will be very grateful for your donation. If you are unable to donate, please feel free to share our page to help us raise awareness.

Racist attacks such as Stephen's are still prevalent in many forms and many parts of the world. An example of families currently affected by such tragedies are that of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor in the US. Though they both lost their life in senseless acts of cruelty, it has required thousands of petitions, emails and public outcry for their families to be heard and convictions to be made. I will leave the links to their go fund me pages below in case you are able to donate towards their legal fees and generally ease their families journey of justice, though I'm sure we can imagine that nothing will compensate the lives lost. But ultimately, supporting these families in being able to right these corrupt systems that seem to fail so many, will hopefully provide a much needed change in proving that there ARE repercussions and neither racism or violence will be tolerated.

***It breaks my heart to have a add another name to this page since creating it. George Floyd, you will be remembered, always. The world is listening and changes are coming.

You can find more information about The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust on their website www.stephenlawrence.org.uk

Thanks for your time, sending lots of love to every one of you.
