Athena Support Groups
Campaign by Aurora New Dawn (RCN 1153154)
At Aurora we have designed a group programme for women after experiencing domestic abuse. Our Athena course aims to increase self-esteem and highlight the dynamics abusers will use through coercive control and violence.

Story

I am challenging myself on possibly the greatest challenges I’ll ever do in my life, a ‘Triathlon’ of the UK! I will be cycling between the most southern to the most northern points of the UK. However, along the way I’ll be hiking the 3 of the tallest peaks and 3 of the longest lakes/lochs in Scotland, England and Wales.

This is TOTALLY out of my comfort zone, I haven’t done anything like this in my life - the first time I sat on a road bike was to begin training for this at the end of 2021. I will be swimming nearly 40 miles, cycling over 1000 miles and hiking 3,400 metres high in total! This is completely unsupported and self organised by me. The reason behind it is to inspire my two children that I am a single parent to and to help bring my mental health back to a good place. I want to raise money throughout this challenge to a charity that helped me massively throughout a very difficult period of my life, Aurora New Dawn, who provides support to women experiencing Domestic Abuse. They were able to support me at my lowest, I would love for any money raised to support more women in incredibly difficult situations.

Aurora New Dawn;

Our Athena group is a course that we have developed over six years. We work with women to support them with the trauma they have experienced after experiencing domestic abuse.At Aurora we believe women need their own spaces to heal from male violence, we fully support the protection of single sex spaces for female victims of male violence. As such, our female only groups, services and spaces apply single sex exemptions under Schedule 3, part 7 of the Equality Act 2010 [1]. Our groups are all female only and are run by and for women.Groups provide a safe opportunity for women to talk about their experiences of domestic abuse and to talk through this with other who have similar experiences. Those who attend can learn coping strategies from others and form supportive bonds with each other. We are now able to run our groups both virtually and in person.Athena is designed around the internationally-recognised Power & Control Wheel and allows survivors to explore the subject of domestic abuse.
