Story
We have been taking part in the Glasgow Childrens hospital charity walks the past few years for our nephew raising funds for such an amazing cause. Little did we know we would be walking this year for our own little girl.
Thea was born on the 5th May 2021, hours after birth Thea took her very first seizure. Thea spent 9 days in NICU in Wishaw General hospital then we were discharged home. We were home for a few days when Thea began having strange movements which looked like the moro startle reflex however Theas were in clusters and became more frequent. Our nephew had experienced similar movements therefore we recognised it was infantile spasms; a rare type of epilepsy in babies but considered a medical emergency due to the catastophic damage it does to the brain. We took Thea straight to a&e Wishaw General where we were transferred to Glasgow Childrens Hospital and an EEG and MRI confirmed our worst fears. Thea was diagnosed with Cortical dysplasia on the left side of her brain which was extensive and also intractable epilepsy meaning she would be treatment resistant. Luckily Theas infantile spasms were stopped quickly and we are so grateful to our consultant Dr McLeod for the quick treatment of same.Thea may need brain surgery in the future but we know she is under the best hands at Glasgow Childrens hospital.
Thea continues to have many seizures a day however she does not let this define who she is; she is funny, sassy and her smile brightens up everyone she meets day. With support from Physio and OT she is developing in her own time and has recently learned to sit and is trying to bum shuffle. She is our star!
This year we are walking for Thea and all the other children and families who are going through similar to ourselves.
