Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In 2014, after nine months of misdiagnosis I was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma – a rare form of cancer - in my right femur and surrounding soft tissue. Since then my world has changed quite considerably. I underwent a year of chemotherapy and three lots of surgery. On top of that I also had C-Difficile and Typhlitis (not good!!). The good news is that I am now in remission, however, I have been left with a number of disabilities which have made life more challenging. I have an internal prosthetic in my right leg, an ankle-foot orthotic and I get around either on crutches, or in a wheelchair. Sadly, the chemotherapy has also affected my eyesight, my hearing, and I have more recently been diagnosed with arthritis in my hands and wrists. In addition, to the aforementioned my stamina is very reduced and I suffer from chronic pain. All of this means that I have ongoing hospital appointments - the good thing is that they are no longer weekly!!
My oncology consultant at the John Radcliffe Hospital sponsored me for a place on the 2018 Journey of A Lifetime. The idea behind the trip is to make a difference to the lives of the young people on the trip and that new found confidence will influence their future. Since my diagnosis my life has been challenging and I have been heavily supported by the medical professionals and my family. I would like to see that this trip will encourage my independence and push my physical boundaries so that I can become less reliant upon my Mum and Grandma in the future, and also ready for college which I will attend in September.
Having gone through the application and interview process I was delighted to learn that I have been awarded a place on this year's trip. The trip is to Peru, Ecuador and The Galapagos Islands. As a part of the trip I have been asked to raise some money toward the cost of going which will exceed more than £5,000.
I will be doing some fund-raising activities myself - selling some of my belongings and I am hoping to hold a small fund raising event.
