Story

Hello, and thanks for visiting our page.

We are Jonny, Matty, Max, Adam, Andrew, Conor, Olly and Pete, and together we are ‘The Slieve Dons,’ a group of mates with a passion for hiking. Some of us have been hiking from a young age and together, we started taking to the mountains more regularly at the conclusion of lockdown 1. We rediscovered a love for the beautiful Mourne Mountains, a sense of freedom and tranquility you can’t get anywhere else.

We decided last summer that we wanted to take on a challenge, and began training for the gruelling Mourne Wall Walk. This 22 mile trek navigates the length of the Mourne Wall, covering 13 peaks, including 7 of the 10 highest in the Mournes.

Upon completion, and after putting ourselves physically and mentally through some serious hardship, we thought we should have sought sponsorship and raised some money for charity along the way.

So here we are, back to the mountains to take on the famous Mourne Seven 7’s in aid of Cancer Focus. Starting and finishing in Donard Car Park, the traditional anti-clockwise route summits Slieve Donard, Commedagh, Bearnagh, Meelmore, Meelbeg, Binnian and Lamagan – The 7 peaks over 700m in the Mourne Mountains. This 20 mile route, starting and finishing at sea level, features nearly 9000 feet of elevation gain and loss, and must be completed in under 12 hours – No mean feat.

The work done by Cancer Focus is invaluable, now more than ever, as disruption from Covid-19 has stopped their important services for those affected most by cancer in our communities. To this end, we are asking for your support – To sponsor us in this endeavour and to help make a difference to all those in need in our communities. Any donation, large or small will be greatly appreciated by both ourselves and those running this prestigious organisation.

Thank you in advance for all your support, we can’t wait to share our progress in this challenge with you.

Best,

The Slieve Dons
