Story
Hi,
In May 2021, I will be taking on the true fear factor challenge, worthy of a place on (most) peoples bucket list - a skydive! As LSU Rag are facilitating the challenge, the money will be passed through them and onto my personal chosen charity Blood Cancer UK (216032). I have chosen this charity in loving memory of my Grandad, who after a long battle with leukaemia sadly passed away on the 5th of June 2014.
Follow me on my journey of fundraising and please do give generously to this worthy cause. Surely seeing me jump out of a plane is worth every penny! Thank you for your kindness.
Grandad was born in London on 26th of August 1933 and married Grandma in 1957, before moving to Banbury in the early 1960’s where they lived for 40 years, after which they relocated up north to Adlington.
Grandad had an amazing memory and could paint a picture for you with his stories of events that happened over 70 years ago. He would re-call the time when he was evacuated with his older brother to Devon for the duration of WW2. On returning to London his school had been bombed and things were not quite the same, but he was thrilled to be reunited with his family. He also reminisced about his deployment to Egypt as part of his national service.
Grandad and Grandma always loved going for walks, I remember on one walk, my brother and I were told that there was a surprise at the end and Grandad was really excited. He took us to an ice cream parlour (Fredericks), which had every flavour imaginable. We were so overwhelmed with all the flavours that we went for the safe option of vanilla ice cream; my Grandad was so disappointed. He never let us forget.
Grandad had always been a determined character, as his 10-year fight against Leukaemia proved to us. We were all amazed and really proud, and take some comfort from the fact, that he was able to keep his independence until the end of his long illness.
Grandad was such an amazing hardworking man, who lived his life with no regrets. He was a perfectionist in everything he did and would persevere to succeed.
He taught me that you must try hard to get to where you want to go in life. People always say how similar I am to my grandad, so I hope that I am making him proud. This skydive symbolises that I am going to live my life to the fullest and make the most of every opportunity put in front of me. If I can jump out of a plane, I can do anything that I put my mind to!
I love you Grandad xx
