From 20 to 26 May 2017, a group of 32 cyclists from Moray Wheelers (average age well above 60) will set off from Elgin to complete a very demanding 7 day cycle. The group will head to Ullapool, set sail for the Outer Hebrides and on arrival at Stornoway, will head south cycling the full length of the Outer Hebrides before catching a ferry from Castlebay in Barra to Oban and back to Elgin via Fort William and Aviemore.
A number of the cyclists taking part in this challenge have been very much affected by cancer. One of our group is currently in remission following lengthy spells of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. Others have lost or had loved ones who have suffered from the disease. They have inspired us to raise as much money as we can for Cancer Research UK. For one of our group 2017 marks the 15th anniversary of his son's death sat the age of 18 from a rare form of cancer.
For a number of years the Moray Wheelers have tried to raise some money to help those who are working hard to find better ways of treating this terrible illness. So far, we have raised in excess of £54,000 and hopefully we will add to that sum this year.
Regrettably, it is a fact that one in two of us will get cancer at some point in our lives, but cancer need not be a death sentence. Screening, earlier detection and improved treatments have all improved survival rates and thanks to advances in cancer research, thousands of people who wouldn't have survived cancer 10 years ago are still here today. By supporting Cancer Research UK we believe that we can help change the statistics in future for all kinds of cancer. We know it can make a difference.
