We are raising funds for Shine Anencephaly Support, to help set up a support group for parents in Northern Ireland and improve support and information available to all expectant parents receiving a diagnosis of this devastating condition.  

Anencephaly -  It's a word we never heard of until Monday 1st December 2014 when a routine antenatal appointment revealed that our little baby was a victim to it. 

It happens when the upper part of the brain and its protective skull cap are missing and the lower part of the brain and the base of the skull do not form properly during the first 4 weeks of pregnancy. Sadly, this condition is not compatible with life, and we have been told that our baby is going to die if not before its born, almost certain shortly after birth. Neural Tube Defects like anencephaly and spina bifida affect 1 in 1000 pregnancies in the UK.

Although we know it may not be the right choice for everyone, we have made the decision to continue with our pregnancy, and we hope to donate our baby's organs to give the chance of life to another child. 

Shine Anencephaly Support provides much needed peer and professional support from the point of diagnosis onwards. By taking our journey public we hope to help to raise awareness of anencephaly and raise vital funds to expand their important work.
