Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My name is Tessa, 59, and I want to use my Clipper challenge to raise funds for Unicef. Unicef is the world's largest charity for children, working in over 190 countries, to help underprivileged children access the care and opportunities that so many of us take for granted. Education, shelter, food, clean water and health care to name a few, but above all opportunity and hope.
The Clipper Race is a unique yacht race that gives amateurs the opportunity to sail around the world. Twelve identical yachts, each led by a professional Skipper to guide his amateur crew, race around the world in eight legs. It is where IT consultants work with farmers; doctors mix with builders; students team up with bankers etc. It is where people of many different nationalities and ages all live together in cramped conditions, yet must all get along and work effectively as a team in a potentially hostile environment. Mother Nature does not distinguish between professionals and amateurs, and our amateur crew will have to deal with whatever weather, storms, huge waves, currents etc that Mother Nature decides to test us with!
It will be a life changing experience for me. I expect to bring back many memories and lessons. About myself, how will I cope when pushed to my physical and mental limits? About giving more when I feel I have nothing left to give. A deeper understanding of different races, cultures, religions, attitudes and lifestyles. The importance of teamwork, tolerance and respect.
The race may be an amateur race, but the challenges are not! All 12 yachts want to 'win' - and one way my yacht wants to win is to raise the most money for charity.
