Nearly two in
three people live in poverty and
millions still lack safe water and basic toilets.
The crisis Over 20% of the population has no access to a safe water supply and over 30% of Rwandans have no toilet. This has a huge impact on health and infant mortality in the country.
Children are more vulnerable than any other age group to the ill effects of unsafe water, poor sanitation and lack of hygiene. Diarrhoea is one of the top three killers of children.
Waterborne diseases are caused by drinking contaminated or dirty water.
Contaminated water can cause many types of diarrheal diseases, including Cholera, and other serious illnesses such as Guinea worm disease,
Typhoid, and Dysentery. Water related diseases cause 3.4 million deaths each year
The World Health Organization says that every year more than 3.4 million people die as a result of water-related diseases, making it the leading cause of disease and death around the world. Most of the victims are young children, the vast majority of whom die of
illnesses caused by organisms that thrive in water sources
contaminated by raw sewage.
