Story

In June 2018 our son Teddy was born at just 23+5 weeks. He had to fight for his life from the day he was born. And he was a fighter. At first he did well and the doctors even said: He is doing very well for such a premature baby. We got to change his tiny nappy. We got to wash his tiny face. We got to read storys to him. We got the chance to feel like normal parents.

However, on day 8 everything changed. He had developed an infection in his tummy called NEC (Necrotising enterocolitis). Teddy fought for another 7 days but a surgery revealed that the infection damaged his intestines more than expected and the doctors couldn't help him anymore.

After just 15 days we had to let our son go. He was surrounded by his Grandma, sisters and us, Mum and Dad.

At this heartbreaking time we found comfort and peace at the children's hospice Christopher's Shooting Star Chase. Here Teddy had his own room and bed. We held him, read to him, sang to him. We got to sit in the garden next to his bedroom window and talk. We took him outside to the garden and showed him the sun and the bright blue sky. His sisters made pictures for him and put them up in his room. They loved going to Christopher's. We got to make a few more memories with our son. We will be forever grateful for those five days we got to spend with Teddy after he had passed away. It helped us to prepare slowly for our final goodbye.

In return for all the support we have recieved and still recieve, we would now like to support the hospice. I, Teddy's Dad, have signed up to walk on fire at the Guildford Fireworks Fiesta on November 3rd. After a theoretical introduction I will hopefully be up for this challenge. I will be brave, just as brave as our baby boy when he put up the fight against his infection.
Please, help us to raise important funds for this amazing charity in memory of our beautiful baby boy Teddy.

Every donation is very much appreciated.

About Shooting Star Chase

Shooting Star Chase is a leading children’s hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families.

Whether lives are measured in days, weeks, months or years, we are here to make every moment count. We support families from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care.

Our bespoke support is free of charge to families and available 365 days a year. Our care service includes short breaks at our two hospices (Shooting Star House in Hampton and Christopher’s in Guildford), Hospice at Home, day care, symptom management, end-of-life care, bereavement care and a comprehensive range of therapies and support groups for the whole family.

It costs £10 million a year just to maintain our current level of care. Around 10% of that income comes from government funding, so we rely on our supporters’ generosity to keep the service running. What’s more, we know there are many more families desperate for our vital support, so it’s crucial we raise more funds to provide more care.
