Story
The Goal
Our goal is to raise £100,000 for our chosen charities Shelter and Women's Aid by rowing the Atlantic Ocean!
The Challenge
The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is the premier event in ocean rowing and the World’s Toughest Row – a challenge that will take us more than 3000 miles west from the Canary Islands to Anitgua & Barbuda. The annual race begins in early December 2021 with up to 35 teams participating from around the world.
Team Wild Waves
We have been best friends since meeting at Cardiff University nearly 10 years ago! Our friendship has always been dotted with incredible challenges; Marathons, Triathlons and more recently an unbelievable ‘Fight Night’ with the White-Collar Fight Club. Collectively we have raised over £8,000 for Charity, some could say a drop in the ocean (excuse the pun!) when compared to our goal for this campaign. We researched the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge after the inevitable.....’well what’s next?’ conversation; it was front and center as the biggest, most rewarding, life changing experience we could undertake. It would also catapult our fundraising efforts well and truly to the next level. Both of us have very strong personalities with gritty determination and would go above and beyond to support each other and those around us.
With no ocean or rowing experience it will certainly be our hardest test yet! Having 10 years of friendship behind us, if we can survive all those days together in a boat, well then, we know we’ll be friends for life!
Shelter & Homelessness
At least 320,000 people are homeless in Britain. This does not take into consideration the ‘hidden’ homeless. Homelessness is an issue that as always struck a chord with us. While training for a White-Collar Boxing Event in Victoria we were heartbroken to see so many people from all walks of life not only sleeping rough but being ignored and avoided. Through our campaign one of our goals is to end the stigma and public perception towards the homeless community. Shelter aim to reduce homelessness by tackling the root cause of the problem; campaigning and working with the government to address the national housing crisis, rights for renters and increased social housing as well as finding secure and safe accommodation for the homeless population. Shelter is an amazing Charity and one we are excited to support through this campaign.
Woman’s Aid & Domestic Abuse
According to the Office of National Statistics (ONS) around 7.9% of women (1,300,000 female victims) suffered domestic abuse in England and Wales during 2018. The Covid 19 crisis has drastically increased the cases of domestic abuse globally. Domestic abuse is also the most cited reason a person becomes homeless. Now more than ever Charites such as Woman’s Aid need vital funds and recourses to support the victims of domestic abuse. Every day we hear accounts of woman and children suffering under terrible and frightening conditions. This is completely unacceptable, and we feel compelled to act and support in any way we can. No person should ever be living in fear of another’s actions with no outlet to escape. Woman’s Aids not only directly supports victims of domestic abuse by providing life-saving services but also works within communities to build a future where domestic violence is not tolerated. Woman’s Aid is a fantastic charity and one we are excited to support through this campaign.
