Story
We are raising money for Ward 31 Oncology as the consultant; Dr Martin Elliott, doctors and nurses all helped save our daughters life. The care and support was exceptional, all the times we rushed back in with infections, sepsis and routine treatment schedules; the staff were always at hand and cared for Sienna.
On the 26th October 2015, our 6-month-old daughter Sienna was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma a rare type of children’s cancer. My wife found a lump in her groin and after taking her to our local hospital we were rushed to the LGI where they confirmed the diagnosis. This is a very rare cancer that affects less than 100 children a year, considering 655,000 children were born in 2015; the percentages are very low. We were completely devastated to receive this news.
Neuroblastoma develops from particular types of nerve cells called neuroblasts. ‘Neuro’ means nerve ‘Blast’ means cells in early development ‘Oma’ means a group of cells, or a tumor. Neuroblastoma often starts in the adrenal glands or the
nerve tissue at the back of the abdomen. It can spread to other parts of the body, which it had done in Sienna. Sienna’s Neuroblastoma primary tumor was 10x10x12cm in size and is in the left side of her abdomen. In addition, the tumors have
spread to the right side of her abdomen, sheath of the spinal cord, lymph node in her neck, thigh muscles, liver and the bones around her eyes.
Sienna received 6 months of chemotherapy and a 12.5 hour operation to remove the tumour. As a result of the amazing treatment from LGI and all the consultants, surgical teams, doctors, nurses and support workers, I have decided to run the Manchester Marathon for Leeds Children's Hospital Ward 31 Oncology.
Sienna is fighting fit and cancer free. The images within this page will provide a snap shot of her journey. As a family, we are extremely thankful for everything LCH has done for us, Sienna is enjoying life to the max and we are so blessed to have Sienna with us.
Leeds Children’s Hospital Reg Charity Number 1075308
For those who know me will often hear me say that “I am built for comfort and not for speed’, but I would like to give my support to Leeds Children's Hospital for all their hard work in delivering us Sienna back to full fitness. The money raised will be sent directly to the charity in order to assist in research and support for families that are going through a stressful and traumatic time, upon receiving the news that their child has cancer.
We had a previous just giving page, this page had other images and updates whilst Sienna was receiving her treatment.
