Every day, two children from anywhere in the South West of England or South Wales will find themselves in need of the life-saving care of the intensive care team at Bristol Children's Hospital. Children can be in the unit for as little as three days, whilst those with more complex needs stay for weeks or months.

Known as the Seahorse Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, (PICU) at Bristol Children's Hospital is one of the largest for children in the UK, caring for over 800 children and babies every year.

Patients come from Bristol and the surrounding areas, as well as from South West, South Wales and further afield.

With 18 beds, PICU offers lifesaving, round-the-clock care to children of all ages from newborn babies to teenagers; some following open heart surgery and others with a range of conditions including breathing problems, meningitis and injuries from serious accidents.

PICU works closely with the University Bristol and the University of the West of England to help us to continue to develop world-class techniques and the best training for the next generation of doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals.

The Grand Appeal has worked in partnership with the unit for nearly 20 years, providing pioneering, life-saving medical equipment, ward refurbishments including new on-ward facilities for parents, patients and staff as well as providing dedicated family accommodation for PICU parents just a stones throw away.
