Story
As a " Bucket List” kind of girl, tuning into the
6 o’clock news 37 years ago the BBC showed , the start the Toughest Foot Race on earth -The Marathon De Sables and out loud I said, “Im going to do
that!
I went to teach in Asia, and spent all my long holidays ticking off from my list. Incredible India to see the iconic Taj Mahal and Varanasi. Nepal for Everest Base Camp. Japan to climb Mount Fuji but never did (a week too early) but with plenty more to discover instead.Slept in those capsule hotels warmest ever. Great Wall of China, lived in both Shanghai and Beijing. Vietnam. Ha Long Bai, Sapa and the Cu Chi Tunnels. Climbed Kilimanjaro. Sailed from Cape Town, one of four crew delivering a Catamaran to Cuba.
Running was my joy, something I could do alone. I didn’t have friends who were runners until I entered my 50’s. I began to focus on running in order to keep the MdS in my sights. Never mentioning it to anyone until I signed up. We are encouraged to have a Charity to run for to help with the mental toughness of the race. I chose Heart Research U.K. in memory of our much loved and respected Coach, David Hawkins aka Big Dave. I’m finally ready to face this challenge.
