Story

Thank you for visiting our page!

ACTUAL DATE: 19TH AUGUST 2023

We are Lisa, Lauren, Eleanor and Julie-Anne.

When and where:

We are trekking Ben Nevis in Scotland, the highest point in the UK, in order to raise money for brain tumour research. To make this even trickier, we will be ascending through the night and trekking in the moonlight. It is going to be really challenging, but, we really hope to reach the summit in time for a beautiful sunrise and make it down for a hearty breakfast at the end!

Saturday 19th August - Sunday 20th August 2023

Target:

Our joint fundraising target was initially £1160! No amount is too little and we are so grateful for your ongoing support.

Participants:

Lisa, Lauren and Julie-Anne are colleagues and Eleanor is Lisa's little sister!

Lisa's story (written by Lisa):

My beautiful daughter Olivia was diagnosed in 2018 with an optic nerve glioma, a slow growing brain tumour behind her eyes. Heartbreakingly, Olivia lost most (if not all) of her vision one month later and is now legally blind, a long cane user and a braille reader.

We have all had to adapt as best as we can to ensure that Olivia is as happy as she can be, she is now just seven years old and has grown into the most intelligent, caring and hilarious little girl, despite spending most of her childhood on chemotherapy. Olivia is currently on her third round of chemotherapy and it is likely we have a long journey ahead. We live from one MRI scan to the next and Olivia will have 3/6 monthly scans for at least the next 10 years.

We hope for continuing stability, however brain tumours are very unpredictable and we just do not know enough about them. We need kinder treatments and more research to find a cure.

Lauren's story (written by Lauren):

In March 2018, my incredible aunty Marilyn was unfortunately diagnosed with glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive types of brain tumours. Despite bravely undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, our hearts were broken in March 2019 when she passed away, thankfully surrounded by the whole family and close friends. I have so many amazing memories growing up with my aunty, all the super fun sleepovers with my cousins, family holidays abroad, picnics in Battersea park and all the other fun times we had together. It was only a short while after losing my aunty that I realised how underfunded brain tumours really are, so, for that reason I plan on embarking on the crazy adventure of hiking Ben Nevis in the dark to raise as much money as possible for charity, but to also raise awareness of the battles that people and families have to face when being diagnosed with a brain tumour. We all love and miss you so much!

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this disease. We are a leading voice calling for support and action for research into what is called the last battleground against cancer.
