Story
We are fund-raising for four different charities in memory of Max - please see our team page by following the linked text above "In memory of: Maxwell Quilter".
Ocean Ward is the specialist paediatric cardiac ward at Southampton Hospital, and the reason Max was referred to Southampton when his condition (Transposition of the Great Arteries or TGA) was diagnosed.
After being born and his immediate care at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Max was transferred to Ocean Ward. He stayed there until his surgery, and then returned there from PICU once he had recovered enough.
Whilst the care here was important for Max, Ocean Ward was also fantastic at supporting Gail, providing her food, a bed to sleep near him, laundry facilities, support and advice. Many of the amenities, including toys and play areas, internet, etc. are paid for by the charity and this holistic approach to care for the families that are here is vital.
The nursing staff handled the day to day (Mandy, Hannah, Laura, Melanie, Mike, Becky, Melissa, Janet, Kerry, Sarah, Emma, Jenny, Tasha, Jess) but we were also looked after most ably by the specialist nurses in charge (Colette, Gill, Kate) and all the cardiac specialists (James, Nicholas, Trevor, Kevin) as well as Max's surgeon (Michael). This care extended from neo-natal (early scans as part of Max's diagnosis) through to check-ups after and finally the specialist advice when Max returned in August.
