Story
Jane and I have dusted off our marathon shoes for one last hurrah. We are fortunate enough to be running for Bowel Cancer UK. This charity is close to our hearts. As many of you will know, our brother Fraser died of bowel cancer in May 2021. His was a Herculean struggle against unequal odds. He faced his adversary with huge amounts of courage and made our journey a more bearable one due in large part to his selflessness and humour, which he showed in abundance throughout his short illness. He wished only for the opportunity to be the best version of himself and whilst this was ultimately denied him, at the end he was very much the best version of himself. He is sorely missed by all who loved him - including his long term partner, Heather, his family and friends.
As he reached his endgame he apologised for not being strong enough but he told us that he tried his best. It is a testament to the man that his concern was not for himself but for the loved ones he left behind. We shall never forget his courage.
26.2 miles will be a huge challenge for both of us, but it pales in comparison to the numerous challenges that Fraser had to face off over a number of difficult weeks. It is fitting that we run the London marathon in his memory. This is a race that was close to Fraser’s heart for indeed he ran the event on two occasions raising much needed funds for his then chosen charities.
I know he will be with us every step of the way and we shall channel his mental toughness when the going gets a little tougher in the latter stages of the marathon. There is no better way to acknowledge his spirit than to raise funds for Bowel Cancer UK, a charity whose aim is to stop people dying of bowel cancer. Early testing is critical in this piece.
Our heartfelt thanks to all of you who support Team MacLean. The charity sector, more than ever, needs these additional resources.
