Event: Jurassic Coast Mighty Hike 2023 - full marathon, on 9 September 2023
In memory of David Griffin
We are hiking a full or half marathon along the stunning Dorset Coast to raise vital funds for people living with cancer.

Story

The Jaffa Cakes are taking on the Jurassic Coast Mighty Hike challenge on 9th September 2023 to walk the length of a marathon in aid of MacMillan in memory of David Peter Griffin who died on 4th September 2022.

David and Cheri had been married for 38 years and had two wonderful children, Dominic and Isabelle. Cheri, Isabelle and Dominic form the Jaffa Cakes team together with Dominic’s partner Caroline. We all remember David’s life being full of love and laughter. Jaffa cakes were one of his favourite snacks and he could demolish a packet in no time!

At the start of 2022, David was fit and well, playing golf regularly and a keen walker. We were looking forward to being able to do some more travelling after all of the Covid restrictions. However, in March 2022, David broke his leg skiing. After an operation in Italy he returned to the UK 9 days later and began his recuperation. Unfortunately following an unrelated medical investigation in May, a scan revealed various shadows inside his body. Numerous tests followed after which he was finally diagnosed with metastatic malignant melanoma.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that can spread to other areas of the body. The main cause of melanoma is ultraviolet light, which comes from the sun. You can try and prevent getting melanoma by wearing a hat and sun block. David had a melanoma on the top of his head four years ago which was treated successfully. We will never know if this original melanoma had spread inside his body but by the time David was diagnosed in 2022, the cancer was established in several areas. At the beginning of July 2022 David still had no symptoms of the cancer but the disease spread rapidly and he died on 4 September 2022.

We are delighted to be raising money for MacMillan who support people living with cancer. We know first hand how difficult it can be to cope with a cancer diagnosis, the need for support to understand treatment options, support for the wider family and the power of palliative care.

  • £30 could pay for an hour of a MacMillan information and support worker.
  • £54 could pay for 200 printed copies of The Cancer Guide booklet.
  • £237 could pay for a MacMillan nurse for a day.

If you can make a donation to this cause no matter how small, we will be extremely grateful.

Thank you for your support.
