Story

Team Hatch is a long distance Triathlon team focused on raising money for Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in memory of Emma Rose Hatchley who sadly died in 2014.  For further details see the team page on https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/TeamHatch2020/

2020 didn’t quite happen as we thought it was going to.  It was going to be our final year of racing to reach our ambitious target fundraising total of £1m but we all know what happened in 2020 #thevirus.  We have however kept the faith, the training discipline and the mission in tact and, in lieu of organised triathlons, we have added an amazing Challenge to the Diary for 2020 to keep our fundraising focus for @greatormondstreet alive.

****Welcome EVERESTING ****‘Everesting’ is the most difficult cycling climbing challenge in the world!  The concept is simple, pick any hill, anywhere in the world and complete repeats of it in a single activity until you climb 8,848m - the equivalent height of Mt Everest.   The ‘concept is simple’ - the execution isn’t!  We think is is difficult enough a task and any donations you give will really motivate us all when the dark moments of this challenge will come - and they will!!!

So there she is (above AND IN GALLERY), Everest, beautifully captured by the brilliant @alunrichardson.  We have teamed up with Alun and @jaggedglobe to put a photographic context to our bike challenge over the coming weeks and to compare the stages of our “everesting” ascent to the real Everest climb.  Alun is a very experienced mountain guide and Jagged Globe are almost certainly the best mountaineering expedition company I know!  Having them by spiritually by our side will be a great comfort.

From Team Hatch we have assembled a strong Expedition Team:

  • Hatch (Emma's dad) (together with local guide and mountain man Oscar) attempting a Col de la Loze 8% avg ascent (5.3 repeats) (Amy, Zack and Oscars’ family in support on the hill)
  • Old Ben and Amelia attempting a Box Hill 4% avg ascent (48 repeats) (Young Ben, Alex, Vicki and others in support on the hill)
  • Ham, Nicola and Elinor attempting the Alp du Zwift ascent average 8.5% (virtual Everesting on a brutal slope)

For each of the above it’s an individual 8,848m single day effort with a massive team support crew.  For the outdoor teams approx 16-20+ hours of effort and for the indoor crews 12-15 hours each hour brutal unrelenting uphill struggle.

Just like the real mountain this one requires a lot of planning, can’t be underestimated and the summit can’t be taken for granted.  Let’s go team - weekend of 15/16th August.  Focus, train, prepare mind, body and spirit and pray for nice weather.
