Story

Team CR2 is made up of Libs, Vanessa, Katy, Ruth, Ruth and Kirsty. We have known each other for years (and years and years). All of us have lived in or went to school in the postcode area CR2, and this is where we met our mutual friend, Jon.

We have each known Jon (or Jonathan, Jono, Jonny or Warren, depending on how you know him) for at least 25 years and, despite this, we all love him very much. In fact Vanessa loved him so much that she married him (Jon would like to be clear that he let the rest of us down gently).

Jon turned 41 in February 2021 and has 3 young children: Jackson (6), Lucy (3) and Jessica (18 months). He is as bright as they come, a fiercely loyal friend, funny to the core, and annoyingly right about most things. He also has Alzheimer's. The form that Jon has is familial, which means that he inherited a gene mutation that causes early-onset dementia. It is a very rare form of Alzheimer's and if you carry the gene mutation then the progression to demetia at an early age (between 30 and 60) is unfortunately inevitable. It also means that his broader family have been impacted by Alzheimer's on a fairly major scale.

The early-onset of Alzheimer's meant that, at 39, Jon had to medically retire from a job that he loved with the Met police where he was a member of one of the Special Operations teams.

Dementia is a heartbreaking disease that steals so much from those who have to endure it as well as from those who love them. Jon and his family are stoic beyond measure about his diagnosis. Many of them, Jon included, participate in studies and clinical trials to support research into effective treatment and maybe even a cure for dementia. Their determination to help others through their own difficult circumstances is incredible, and Team CR2's fundraising efforts are all rooted in our admiration for Jon and the rest of the Fisher family.

Team CR2 is taking on a 26 mile trek, starting from Stonehenge, on 11th September 2021, to raise funds for Alzheimer's Society so that we can support their vital work to understand the causes of dementia, improve diagnosis, and ultimately find effective ways to prevent and treat this disease. The hope is that there will be ground-breaking treatement available within the next 5 years if research can continue apace.

Please donate whatever you can to sponsor us. Every pound donated matters. All funds raised will go to Alzheimer's Society and move us all closer to a world where dementia no longer threatens our loved ones.

Thank you for your support.

p.s. If you are not sure what to donate, think how much you might give to see a small hippo train for and complete a marathon. This neatly sums up the challenge ahead for at least one team member so surely worth a few £ just to see the finish line (or midway passed out headfirst in a hedge) photos?
