Story
We are four courageous women who support health equity and solidarity and are enthusiastically running our first half marathon together! Camilla, Lisa, Sharon and Tam would love your support!
Some of you may know, I have had the privilege of leading Amref Health in the UK for the last two years. Before taking on the position, I had no idea these would be such critical years in the health sector and how Africa would be affected.
Amref has been at the forefront of the COVID-19 response in Africa, training and supporting health workers in countries whose under-resourced health systems have been hit hard. In June this year, Amref Health Africa launched ‘Vaccine Solidarity’, an ambitious campaign to support COVID-19 vaccination across Africa.
This is the largest and most complex global vaccination drive in history. The speed and scale of the roll-out has been impressive: but it has not been equitable. This is where we need your help!
On the 14th September 2021, Dr Tedros, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, said that of the > 5.7 billion doses that have been administered globally, only 2% have been administered in Africa.
As of the 15th September, 9.3 doses had been administered for every 100 people in Africa. This means the continent is not on track to meet the WHO's goal of all countries vaccinating 10% of their populations before the end of September (some African countries have already met the target, but there is a huge disparity). On the current trends, a shortfall of 50 million doses is expected.
Vaccine Solidarity Campaign’s main objective is to mobilise support within the UK for vaccine equity on a global scale but focusing on Africa where Amref works. We are raising funds to support the next phase of Amref Health Africa’s wide-ranging COVID-19 response to create the conditions for a successful continent-wide vaccination drive.
Camilla, Lisa, Sharon and Tam's half marathon is one of Amref’s many fundraising events, and I hope you will donate to this important cause.
Thank you
