Story
Our personal experience:
James Cook NICU gave us a warm and welcoming environment to visit our baby 24/7. The family room gave us comfort and a space to unwind from the intensity of intensive care and the high-dependency rooms where our son spent time. The unit gave me a flat located less than 10 metres from NICU when I was discharged as a patient so I could rest during the day and night until I was well enough to eventually go home.
The nurses and doctors showed love, care and support like they were a member of our family. I've never met so many people in such a small space of time with the biggest hearts.
Until my son needed intensive care, I actually didn't know these units existed. They are truly worth their weight in gold and more, and we will be eternally grateful for everything they did to save and care for our Albert.
About the charity
The James Cook Hospital Neonatal Charitable Fund helps us to provide treatment and care over and above what the NHS would routinely provide.
People’s generous donations really do make a huge difference to both staff and families, funding everything from creating a tranquil and relaxing outdoor space where people can take a break from the busy ward, to the latest medical or technical equipment.
Some of the things the fund has provided over the years include memory boxes and keepsakes for families of babies who have sadly passed away, as well as family rooms,
cooling mats and other equipment.
Funds also go towards improving our parents’ accommodation as well as for the further education of our staff.
