Team Simpsons are a group of staff who work in maternity services at the Simpson Centre for Reproductive Health, Edinburgh. It began with only two members who had committed themselves to running in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival in May 2018 to raise funds for SANDS Lothians. Christina Marshall, the 5k distance and Maria Wood the half marathon. Christina and Maria asked a couple of colleagues if they would like to join them and and since then the team has grown and grown and now has 130 runners consisting of midwives, student midwives, obstetricians, anesthetists, pathologists and pathology technicians, administration staff, support staff, theatre staff, a gynecologist and a pharmacist. Friends, family and children are also taking part and the team has an entry in every event over the two day festival. The support has been way beyond expectation and the camaraderie amongst staff truly inspirational, everyone is extremely motivated in raising funds for SANDS.
SANDS Lothians are a charity that offers support, understanding and help to bereaved parents who have experienced the death of a baby. The staff at Simpsons know and witness the devastation the loss of a baby at any stage has on families and are aware of the fantastic support that SANDS Lothians can offer, including free open ended counselling. Fifteen babies a day die in the UK and demand for charity support such as SANDS is massive. Funds raised by Team Simpsons could help SANDS Lothians to continue to support bereaved parents in a number of ways. For example:
£5 could pay for a photo memory card for precious memories.
£22 could pay for a parents memory bag.
£40 could pay for a counselling session for parents, helping them to rebuild their lives.
As well as offering support to families, SANDS Lothians also offers support to healthcare professionals as dealing with the death of a baby can be extremely distressing. Team Simpsons is independent from the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and is not endorsed by NHS Lothian.
