Story

Thank You for visiting our Just giving page.

In January 2017, our fit and healthy son was complaining about a pain in his arm. A few days of the pain not going away we took Owain to see the local GP. That day will forever been in our lives.  Later that day we found ourselves in Bristol Children's Hospital A&E department, never expecting to be told that Owain could have Leukaemia. Owain was diagnosed with the rare form of AML Leukaemia the following day, after our first night of many in hospital. Chemotherapy started almost straight away and soon after we found out that Owain was High Risk of the Leukaemia retuning with just Chemotherapy alone and that a Bone Marrow Transplant would be needed.

After three long courses of Chemotherapy we had the transplant in May. For the following 6 weeks Owain was in complete isolation. The only contact with his family was me, Cerys and his two Grandmas. His little sister Thea wasn't allowed on the ward the whole time. At the end of June and 5 long months of being on Ward 34 we were discharged. Since then we have had many ups and downs that come with any transplant, With the amazing support of our family and friends, the staff at the Bristol Children Hospital and the staff at CLIC Sargent we have been able to cope with this life changing situation.  We are still visiting the hospital regularly but life is beginning to get back to the new "normal".

CLIC Sargent really helped us with information and advice, we would never have thought of or considered when all you care about is your little boy getting better.

We have also seen first hand the excellent work that  CLIC House does in Bristol.  It is a house that offers a home from home experience for families who are not from Bristol, and allows the whole family to be close to the hospital.

Matt and I are going to be doing something neither of us thought we would ever do and run the London Marathon!

Matt - For those that know me I am not built for long distances with my favourite distance being the sofa to the fridge. However, what Owain has gone through without much fuss since January has been incredible so putting in the training and completing the run to raise money for CLIC makes it worth it.

Cerys - Since Owain`s diagnoses running has taken on a whole new meaning for me. Exercise has always been something I enjoyed but never running. Driving to and from the hospital and seeing people out running when I couldn't has inspired me to run whenever I can. The last 9 months have been tough, and I know London will be tough but compared to what we have been through I know we can do this together.
