Story
I'm hiking 630 miles along the coast path, carrying my home on my back, and I'm going to do it dressed as a pirate. It's a cause that rests firmly close to me hearties (sorry).
I'm walking for Outward Bound Charity. This is a charity that work with young people of a range of ages, from a huge number of different schools across the nation. Those of you who already know the value of a day out in nature: you should know that you are lucky. There are some kids who have never left the city. There are some kids who think the world exists on a tiny screen; that life is nothing but Youtube channels and Tiktok. I see everyday how much this effects their mental health, and how they see the world through a narrowed lens.
When I was little I had nature on my doorstep. I was gifted experiences by my parents; we went on holidays to the Lake District every year. Not everyone has that, but Outward Bound sets out to change this. I honestly could not feel more strongly about something if I tried, and I'm glad I finally had a chance to voice that properly.
I get that the world changes; technology advances; attitudes shift. I will never stop believing that there is this beautiful simplicity to life that you can only really find outdoors. You find it when you challenge yourself, and when you achieve something you never thought you could. That simplicity has seen me through dark times. If I could pass on anything to future generations, it would be that.
