On Sunday 12 November, Karl Jenkins made a rare visit to Scotland, only the second time he has been here and this time to conduct his Requiem. The concert was in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust, and dedicated to the memory of Andrew Delaney.
This work combines the traditional Latin text of the Requiem mass with settings of Japanese 'haiku' poems. The result is a powerful and moving work, whose musical tying together of different cultures is highly appropriate to the modern world. Karl oversees the combined forces of members of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and a massed choir from around Scotland, with soprano Elizabeth McCormack, treble Tom Baird and shakuhachi [Japanese flute] player Clive Bell.
As the composer of 'The Armed Man, a Mass for Peace', and the Adiemus projects, Karl holds the distinction of being the highest placed living composer in Classic FM's Hall of Fame.
The concert also included a performance of Vaughan Williams' beautiful 'Tallis Fantasia', conducted by Peter Cynfryn Jones.
Lighting design was by the celebrated artist Adrian Wiszniewski.
The concert was sponsored by Scottish Widows.
