Story
After a couple of half hearted ballot attempts, watching the London Marathoners ‘joy’ (and pain) whilst crossing Tower Bridge in 2021 really motivated me to apply again and I have been lucky enough to get a spot with a fantastic charity- Alzheimer’s society.
Contrary to popular belief, dementia and specifically Alzheimer’s is not inevitable as we age. It does however affect 850,000 people in the UK and costs UK economy approx £23 billion a year, predicted to triple by 2040…
Working with Alzheimer’s patients on a daily basis, I see first hand how life changing this disease is for both patients and their families.
Alzheimer’s society helps fund crucial research for further treatment options (currently very limited and most medications are only beneficial in the early stages of the disease process), provides support for patients and their families in the community (befriending services, care for people within their own homes) and gives valuable information on how Dementia may (and most likely will) progress and how to manage these symptoms and where to get help when needed.
Having never run further than 13.1 miles, 26.2 seems absolutely TERRIFYING… However I’ve attempted to start training (although my work rota isn’t exactly conducive for this) and always welcome some running/cycling company or if you just fancy a laugh, my pain and suffering will always be hilarious to witness.
Alzheimer’s society is a fantastic charity, who I’m honoured to represent and I would be extremely grateful for any donations!
