Fundraising for Blue Cross
I've always thought about taking part in something like this, but like most never actually thought i would do it!
When a poster arrived at work one Monday morning advertising the Africa trek i knew it would be the experience of a lifetime. Luckily one of my work colleagues wanted to take part to, so on impulse we signed up straight way.....
Theres no turning back now....
This challenge involves trekking 62 miles across The Great rift valley in temperatures of upto 80 degrees. Our route will take us across the African country, along a path where Maasia villages and majestic volcanoes rise out of the acacia and savannah bush - this makes the most dramatic but beautiful backdrop imaginable to hold our trekking challenge.
Part of our challenge will take us to Lake Manyara Park where injured and orphaned animals in Tanzania are cared for. We will embark on a game drive around the park to gain a true insight into how the animals are looked after once they have been rescued from the wild. This will seem a million miles away from our hand rearing Kittens, Puppies and Hedgehogs back home!
Although this challenge may seem easy to some, I have now committed all my spare time to training and fundraising to raise money for the Blue cross. This involves short treks on a daily basis and at least once a week going for an 8 hour trek(poor Wilson!!). Not only will we be trekking, we will also be doing cardiovascular workouts and muscle building to ensure we can carry our belongings across the plains in the extreme heat.
Why the blue cross? The Blue Cross was founded in 1897 as an organisation committed to improving animal welfare, something i feel VERY strongly about. They now have 11 adoption centres around the UK and find loving new homes for more than 6,000 unwanted and abandoned companion animals (dogs, cats and small family pets) every year, giving them a second chance and a new lease of life.
The Blue Cross have three equine centres that take in and care for horses and ponies with health or behavioural problems and/or whose owners can no longer cope. After undergoing a programme of training or rehabilitation, the horses and ponies are placed in carefully selected loan homes, where they can go on to live useful and purposeful lives. Currently, over 400 horses are owned by the charity with 320 on loan to approved homes.
The Blue Cross’s four animal hospitals, last year provided more than 90,000 free veterinary treatments (consultations, operations and diagnostic tests) for pets whose disadvantaged, elderly or disabled owners could not afford private veterinary fees, they do amazing work and we feel they are a charity that deserve our support.
Please, please, please help me in my challenge to raise as much money as possible for The Blue Cross.
I will keep you updated on my training and fundraising progress.
