Story
Maternal Aid Association, Maa, is a grassroots charity dedicated to working on global maternal health issues in resource-poor settings. Maa provides medicine, resources and education to mothers and young women in developing countries.
Currently Maa's work is focused in two villages in Bangladesh but in the future we hope to expand into more locations. Our long term goal is to establish a Hub-spokes model of care in which mothers have access to immediate treatment in remote villages through ‘spokes’ and more difficult cases can be referred to specialists based in centralised ‘hubs’. After building a stable system in Bangladesh we aspire to replicate this system across more developing countries around the world.
MaaMonth was started in 2018 as a national initiative every February to raise money and allow Maa to continue the work we do to support mothers. Universities across the UK compete against each other to raise the most money for Maa within one month and to be crowned MaaMonth Champion! In 2021, we raised £21,650 with 28 universities taking part. This year we have over 30 universities on board including some from outside the UK! The money raised provides crucial funding for Maa to continue running our clinics in rural areas of Bangladesh.
We are also piloting our new healthcare app, MaaConnect,
with our MedTech specialists in India. We have also started expanding our work internationally, beginning with Afghanistan - by helping Afghan mothers through our clinics set up in villages.
