An ultrasound helps to monitor the development of an unborn baby in the womb. The guidelines recommend two mandatory ultrasounds - at 12 weeks and 20 weeks. This is to determine the gestation of the pregnancy and to observe the anatomy of the foetus for defects or abnormalities.
In Bangladesh, women usually consider pregnancy as a normal event. Unless complications arise and most of them refrain from seeking antenatal care (ANC) - prior preparation for childbirth is not widely available or affordable. This is mainly due to financial constraints – as a typical scan can cost around 1,000.00 BDT approximately. Hence, the reason for disregarded ANC for the underprivileged.
Nearly one-quarter to one-third of Bangladesh's population live under extreme poverty. To improve the maternal health indicators, it is necessary to develop interventions that meet the health needs of extremely poor women.
“Amina came seeking help to the RDF Maternity Clinic. Seven months into her pregnancy, she complained of pain and suspected reduced movement in the womb. As we did not have ultrasound equipment she was referred to a hospital at our cost. Through further scans it was established that the baby had died and she required immediate surgical intervention”.
Such cases can be minimised with your help.
With your continuous help RDF Maternity Clinic is up and running, the first purpose built clinic in this region of Sunamgonj - but lacking on key medical equipment.
We urgently require an ultrasound machine so we can start an effective and efficient antenatal service.
Every mother has felt the sacredness of her responsibility in this. Each has felt the weightiness of the opportunity to bring forth life. It is sobering and glorious at once. We are privileged to receive state of the art Antenatal services in first world countries while women lack the basic in the third world.
Please help us help them. £10,000 will help us secure the much-needed ultrasound machine. Dig deep and contribute whatever you can.
As part of my trip I will be visiting Bangladesh later this year to deliver this ultrasound machine along with numerous activities.
The key areas of my visit will focus on:
- Maternity Hospital
- Health and well-being
- Sports activities
- Delivering a cataract clinic
- House Building Projects
- Setting up a soup kitchen
