FROM TOUGHEST ROW TO TOUGHEST FOOTRACE
THE CHALLENGE
In 2015 Frances and Niki were part of the four-woman Yorkshire Rows team which rowed across the Atlantic and into the record books as the oldest female team to row any ocean. They are now firmly back on dry land and are taking part in the Marathon des Sables in April 2018 – six days and 156 miles under the merciless Saharan sun. That’s a marathon every day but one and that one special day is THE LONG STAGE - a double marathon – 52 miles!
They will have to be self-sufficient, carrying all their own food and equipment on their backs. Temperatures regularly reach 50 degrees centigrade during the day and drop to around 5 degrees at night. Their feet will swell, crack and bleed under the pressure but none of that will matter when they cross the finishing line!
THE CAUSE
Maggie’s Centres offer a unique blend of free, practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer and for those closest to them. And all in a building designed to be calming and peaceful, a home from home with a welcoming kitchen table at its heart.
Maggie’s Yorkshire will be built in the grounds of St James’s University Hospital in Leeds to complement the hospital’s excellent clinical care.
As so many others have been, Niki and Frances have both been affected by cancer in relatives close to them and they are hoping to raise as much as possible to support the wonderful work which Maggie’s does.
