Story
I'm taking part in Action Radiotherapy's #miles4radiotherapy challenge as part of the LSBU Therapeutic Radiography Society team. We're going to be trying to travel as far as possible between 1st July and 3rd October to raise some money for this fantastic charity. As part of our team challenge I've set myself the personal goal of covering 750km across the three months. I'll likely be walking and cycling this distance because running remains a no-go following a bouldering injury a couple of months ago. Which, to be honest, is a bit of a relief cuz, you know, running.
This has required a fair amount of commitment and willpower on my part, due to being on placement during this time and having a hell of a lot of uni work to finish up before the end of the academic year. I should also probably mention that I'm not a 'pro cyclist' and don't have a speedy road bike, so clocking up the miles will involve some effort. Hey-ho - it's all in the name of charity!
Speaking of which, it would be really ace if any of you could spare a few pennies to donate to Action Radiotherapy, which is what this challenge is all about. I started training to be a therapeutic radiographer in September 2020 because I wanted to play my part in battling cancer and supporting patients through their radiotherapy treatment. So many of us have a loved one who has undergone cancer treatment and this often involves radiotherapy. For me, radiotherapy was an important part in my dad's cancer treatment and, while it didn't cure him, I know it played it's part in giving him as much time with us as possible.
Basically, radiotherapy is not only super cool (big complicated machines shooting x-rays at cancer cells?!), but it can also be life saving. More funding and research is needed to continue developing radiotherapy services so that more people can have a positive experience of radiotherapy and live beyond cancer. This is where Action Radiotherapy come in - their aim is to improve radiotherapy services for both patients and staff throughout the UK. And who doesn't want that?!
