Story
In December 2017 I was diagnosed with systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) and secondary raynauds.
This is a rare and incurable, life limiting and fatal autoimmune condition. It causes over production of scar tissue both externally and more importantly on your major internal organs together with muscle wastage and stiffness, joint pain, aneamia, fatigue, gastric intestinal tract issues, acid reflux and extreme hyper sensitivity to the cold amongst other things!!
Its funny how fast things in life can change but also amazing how quickly we can learn to adapt and accommodate those changes.
In the last 8 months I have developed an intolerance to certain foods such as gluten, diary & caffeine because of scar tissue in my gastro intestinal tract, acid reflux and chest pain is a constant companion, along with constant leg pain, fatigue, muscle fatigue, cramps and stiff painful hands. I suffer bouts of vomiting and vertigo but I refuse to give in and let the condition rule me !
I take strength and courage from the people round me everyday and know that with my husband John supporting me I can and will get through the tough days. I don't know what my future holds, but I do know that no-one will ever say or write that "Sylv gave up" !
I am running 62 miles over 2 days and have set a team target of £10,000, £1 for each fellow warrior who suffers with this condition in the UK. This will be the last big event I will tackle as the training for this is already so much harder than ever before.
SRUK are the only UK charity that look after people in the Uk with the condition and are fighting for research into a cure and better medication everyday with less drastic side effects. All research is privately funded as there are not enough patients for government funding.
