Severe flooding has hits parts of Bangladesh and Assam. Whilst the region is prone to heavy rainfall in the monsoon season, climate change amongst other factors have resulted in severe flooding not seen in over 100 years. Over 6 million people have been affected and nearly 60 have died with this number estimated to be under-reported. Forecasts predict the worst is yet to come. Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world and bears the brunt of climate change due to it being low-lying land and at risk due the increasing sea levels and the melting glaciers of the Himalayas.
Recent events have seen people fleeing their homes for safety, left without food and water for days, and with no means of communication as electric and phone lines are down. I've personally heard local reports of children being swept by the force of the water from families and people searching for missing family members. I've seen horrific images of dead animals and its heartbreaking that our actions in driving climate change have consequences on people already struggling to survive.
Food: The majority of people in rural areas rely on farming their own land for food, and relying on cattle and livestock. The flood has completely wiped out sources of food and income
Water wells and pumps are used to provide water from underground sources and the flooding has resulted in contaminating the water sources
Waterborne diseases: UNICEF reported that over 1.5 million children are at risk of waterborne diseases due the flooding not to mention starvation and malnutrition
Electric and phone lines have been shut down leaving many without means of communication.
Homes: many will now be left without homes/homes in severe disrepair and will need to rebuild
The charity I am raising money for are a UK based non-profit who work on the ground in Sylhet. They will be providing immediate relief and food packages and have already delivered over 600 food packs and over 20 boats. The charity will also be focusing medium/longer term and focusing on housing repairs and medical treatment.
