Story
I only ever had one grandparent growing up and he was my world - last year I lost my world.
I would like to say he suffered with Alzheimer’s, which he did. But truth be told he was looked after night and day in a warm bed with lots of love and attention from his fantastic care workers who don’t get the credit they should.
My grandad showed up for me when I needed him most - whether it was every week at my theatre performances, having a little lunch together or lending me money for my first ever parking ticket!
I decided this year I wanted to show up for him.
I’ve chosen to challenge myself, raise awareness and show my gratitude to Alzheimer’s UK for helping my family through this intensely emotional journey.
I’m certainly not a regular swimmer, but I’ve decided to push my personal ability to find inner strength for my grandad.
Starting on 1st February 2023, I’ll be swimming 20 miles in 30 days, god help me.
It won’t be easy but I know Grandad Alf will be watching over me tutting, giggling and cheering me on (in his cockney accent).
900,000 people are currently living with dementia across the UK. Until the day we find a cure, Alzheimer's Society is here for everyone affected. Wherever they are, whatever they're going through.
Your donations will keep me going so please hit the Give Now button and donate what you can to help beat dementia. Thank you!!
P.S. messages of support are welcomed, I think I'm going to need it!
