Many of you may not have heard of vasculitis, or be aware of what different diseases it can cause. I didn’t until my great uncle John was diagnosed with it 20 years ago. Vasculitis is an auto-immune disease where the body’s immune system attacks blood vessels instead of defending them against infection. If you consider the size, complexity and importance of the network of blood vessels in our body, you won’t be surprised by the variety and life-threatening potential of this disease. 

Vasculitis UK (https://www.vasculitis.org.uk/) proved invaluable to John and his wife Susan after the diagnosis, and in return they have dedicated an incredible amount of time, energy and passion to supporting others through Vasculitis UK, helping to increase awareness of this complicated and under-diagnosed disease, and pushing for further understanding and treatments through research. 

I’m honoured to be running (my first half marathon!) at The Great North Run on 12th September 2021 to help fundraise for Vasculitis UK and for all those who are supported by the fantastic work they do.

As an added bonus, I’m looking forward to being able to run the race with my Dad, who will no doubt be my pacer!
