Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In August 2013 my husband Chris finally succumbed to the neurological disease that he had been suffering from for 8 years. For the final six months or so I nursed him at home, which is what we both wanted.
It wasn’t easy, I was “on call” day and night, and had to have some fairly intensive training on using the machines needed to help monitor him and also with tube feeding, as by this stage he was unable to eat normally.
Tynedale Hospice at Home were a godsend...a fully trained and very caring nurse came out to our home to stay with Chris every week for one afternoon, giving me chance to go shopping or even just to take the dogs for a walk.
That time off was invaluable to me and I knew Chris was in very good hands with someone who understood his illness and how to care for him.
This “adventure” that I’ve signed up for is the most challenging, an endurance test like no other.
It’s mentally and physically VERY demanding, and also dangerous. Although safety is paramount, nothing can prepare you for the unexpected. People have died, yachts are damaged and in the 17/18 race one was even lost..
But we have only one life and Chris would have loved to do such a thing, but sadly he never got the chance.
No one knows what the future holds, but given a choice, most people would like the opportunity to spend their last days in their own home amongst their own family. Tynedale Hospice at Home enables this and I will be forever grateful to them.
Please give generously to this wonderful local charity, in Chris’s memory most certainly, but more importantly to enable them to help future families in severely distressing circumstances.
Thank you,
Susan x
