Story
Hello, my name is Susan and I would like to welcome you to my page and tell you about my dear younger sister Julie.
Julie turned the big 50 on 11th July 2008 and as that is the age limit for routine mammograms she got the call for her first one almost a year later on 29th May 2009. Less than one month later she was diagnosed with having breast cancer on 24th June 2009. As the cancer was invasive she subsequently had two operations and has since started 7 months of chemotherapy which will be followed by 4 weeks of radiotherapy.
To support Julie I am going to have my head shaved as I don't want her to feel alone with her hair loss. I would like to raise as much money as I can for the Breast Cancer Campaign, but also to make women aware of the importance of breast screening. Every woman is advised to check their breasts, Julie did exactly that but never had any reason to be concerned as her breasts felt normal and she was perfectly well. The cancer was only detected following her routine screening. The consultant explained that this is why it's so important to have the screening done. Julie never had any reason to think she would be diagnosed with this devastating disease as she had no symptoms and felt completely well. So I want to raise awareness, and urge all of us women to check our breasts and go for that first mammogram when you get the call, yes it may be a little uncomfortable or the appointment not fit in with your day but those 5 minutes could be a life saver! For this reason I would like to see breast screening lowered to the age of 40. To this end I am writing to our local MP for his support.
I am having my head shaved on 25th November at midday at Fatal Attraction, Sudbury. Please feel free to come along .
If you would like to make a donation please do, anything you can spare will be greatly appreciated and could make all the difference. Thankyou for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Many thanks Susan x
