Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Most of you know me for my work in sustainability and engineering, but my first passion was lions. I have always been fascinated by these magnificent creatures, and was horrified to learn that wild lions could become extinct in my life time; just think for a moment never to see these amazing apex animals walk the plains of Africa. Also, the disruption to the overall ecosystem if they disappear could be catastrophic.
I have been quietly supporting the conservation of lions by both volunteering at a sanctuary in 2016, and also creating unique abstract art works; please take a look at my website www.art4lions.com. I recently became part of the LionAid Midlands volunteering group and we have agreed to trek up Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for a conservation project in Merueshi; more information on the LionAid website. We will be visiting the project as part of the fund raising. In essence the project involves the use of PV to support flashing lights which keep lions away and protect the livestock. It will also provide much needed power for the community, particularly the children to complete homework. It has come to the attention of Lion Aid that schools in the area lack the basic facilities and monies raised will also assist upgrading of basic amenities.
I am paying for the entire trip myself, so all money raised through this page goes directly to LionAid. I am looking to raise around £5000, so any amount you feel able to contribute would be wonderful. This also includes any purchase of my paintings as part of my Art4lions.com work, just send me a note to shonebrookes@outlook.com, and I can arrange to send.
My family think I have gone totally bonkers, in my 50th decade , this is going to be quite a tough gig! Africa's highest peak is 19,340ft or 5,895m, that is 5x Ben Nevis and will take 6 days to climb to allow for my body to adjust to the altitude and reduced oxygen. I will be posting regular updates for the sheer laugh of it all. LionAid are also making a film of the trip, so more enjoyment to come.
Thanks so much for visiting this page and for any support you have provided. You have made such a big difference to the lives of the local people, and our ongoing fight to protect the 'King of the jungle' , so this magnificent animal can continue to live, as it has for millennia, on the wild African savanna. :-)
Best ... Susan
