We fund PKD research and give help to transform lives

Story

Over the past 7 years I have done a couple of runs for the PKD charity including a half marathon in Clumber Park, Dirty Double back to back 10k runs around the lake district and 2019 London marathon.  Now after the last few crazy years it’s time to take on another challenge for the PKD Charity that is so close to my kidneys!!!

Just a little bit about my story, as you may or may not know I was diagnosed 27years ago with Polycystic Kidney Disease, after it was found that my mum had the genetic disorder.  There are about 70,000 adults and children in the UK that have PKD which is a life-threatening inherited condition that can cause renal (kidney) failure and affect other organs in the body.

Both my mum and brother had received the gift of life via kidney transplants. After being on dialysis for 10 years we were very surprised for my mum to receive THE call and she was given a new lease to life, which she would not have had if it wasn’t for her donors family. Unfortunately 6years after her transplant my mum lost her battle in October 2019. So this one is definitely for her, she was so proud of all my other achievements. Now I can't really complain that I have had any real issues with it at the moment but my GFR (Glomerular filtration rate) has taken a steady decrease currently sitting at 34. According to the National Kidney Foundation, normal results range from 90-120.  About 6 months ago I started a new drug to help stabilise them and so far this seems to be working and fingers crossed it gives me a few more years before I need to consider dialysis or transplants.

So along with 3 other slightly crazy friends I will be taking on the Race To The King 100km (62mile) nonstop walking challenge on the 11th of June 2022.
